Smartypants ("the app") is a personal, non-commercial, invite-only project run by Blake Engel and Jessica Taylor. It lets a person securely sign in to their own MyChart / Epic accounts and retrieve, understand, and stay on top of copies of their own health records, and share them with family caregivers they specifically authorize. By using the app you agree to the following.
What the app does
After you sign in on your provider's own MyChart screen and grant permission, the app retrieves read-only copies of the health information you approve there, and uses them to: deliver new documents to you (in the app, by push notification, and optionally printed at home), write plain-language summaries, and answer your questions from your own records. The app never writes to or changes your medical record, and it never sees or stores your MyChart password. You can revoke its access at any time, from the app or from MyChart itself.
How your data is handled
The app stores your retrieved records encrypted, along with an encrypted connection credential, and relies on a small set of service providers who process data only on our behalf (Epic/MyChart, Supabase, Render, Google sign-in, Anthropic, Voyage AI, Deepgram, Apple/Google push, and Resend). Exactly what is collected, how it is used, who can see it, how administrative access is logged, and your rights to obtain a copy of or delete your data are described in our Privacy Policy, which is part of these terms.
Not medical advice, and AI can be wrong
The app is for personal informational use only. It is not a medical service and does not provide medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. The plain-language summaries and chat answers are written by AI and can be wrong; they are meant to help you understand a document, never to replace the original note or a conversation with your care team. Your provider's own portal and your care team remain the source of truth for anything that matters. For any health decision, contact your healthcare provider.
Your responsibilities
- Connect only accounts you are entitled to connect: your own portals, and a dependent's (a child's or a parent's) only where you hold proxy access or the legal authority to act on their behalf, and with their knowledge where required.
- Visit recording: if you use the optional visit-transcription feature, you are responsible for obtaining your physician's permission, respecting their wishes if they decline, and complying with all applicable state and local recording laws.
- Keep your access secure: protect the Google account you sign in with, and tell us promptly if a device is lost or stolen so access can be revoked (you can also sign any person out of all devices from the app).
- Printed pages are your responsibility once printed: anyone with access to the home can pick them up from the tray.
Invitations and termination
Access is by invitation and may be declined, suspended, or ended by us, or by you, at any time. If your access ends, the Privacy Policy's deletion terms apply: on request we delete all of your data, and nothing is retained after account closure.
No warranty; limitation
The app is provided "as is," without warranty of any kind. It is early-stage, actively developed software run by two people, without formal outside certification or an independent security audit; it may be slow, unavailable, imperfect, or change at any time. To the fullest extent permitted by law, our liability to you in connection with the app is limited to the amount you paid to use it, which is nothing, because the app is free.
